A regal time at Royal Winter Fair
Dufferin participants had a regal time representing the county at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair last month.
There were many entries in many different categories and the results are impressive.
Justin Lasby, a 4-H’er from Shelburne, was first in the Hereford Showmanship competition at the Scotiabank Classic Junior Beef Heifer Show, with his entry Hereford JDL Janice Jur 126P. He then went on to win the Intermediate Showmanship class and then was named the Grand Champion showman, a huge achievement.
Woolwich Dairy of Orangeville made an incredible showing in the goat cheese competition winning first through seventh with their entries Madame Chevre Elite Cranberry with Port, Madame Chevre Elite Roasted Red Pepper, Madame Chevre Elitre Lemon Poppy Seed, Crotin Herbes de Provence, Chevrai Cranberry with Cinnamon, Goat Milk Brie and Chevrai Bruschetta. The company also took 10th place with their Goat Milk Feta, 12th with Chevrai, 13th with Woolwich Mozzarella and16th with their White Cheddar from Goat’s Milk
At the end of competition Woolwich Dairy received the championship for the highest points with their Madame Chevre Elite Cranberry with Port.
At the National Aberdeen Angus show the Orangeville entry of Locust Grove Blackbird by the Hasson Cattle Co., Locust Grove Angus, Nostadt Stock Farms placed fourth in the Female Heifer, Born 2004 class. Nicole Stirk of Orangeville placed sixth in the class with her heifer, HCC Evanescence 19P.
At the annual Hereford cattle show, Grosvenor Farms of Shelburne placed third and fifth and sixth in the Female Heifer, Born 2005 class, with Grosvenor Ms Supreme 324N 315R, Grosvenor Ms Supreme 29F 419R and GRO-JDL Temptation 324N 122R. In the Yearly Female, Born 2004, Justin, Josh and Jessica Lasby of Shelburne placed third with their heifer JDL Janice Jur 126P.
Grosvenor Farm took fifth in the Female, Born in 2003, with her 2005 Purebred Calf at Foot class with Ms Supreme 29F 508N.
The Lasby Family was second in the Bull Calf, Born 2005 with JDL Lucky Strike 13J 220R, and calf went on to be named the Reserve Junior Champion Bull Calf.
Wallace and Fern Pugh of Orangeville placed first in the Yearling Bull, Born in 2004 class, with their entry Lian 62J Professor ET 229P. Grosvenor Farms placed fourth in the Bull, Born 2003 class with GH Neutralizer ET 324N.
Finally, at the Hereford show the Lasby family place second in the Progeny of Dam class.
Shelburne exhibitors had some success at the 2005 Charolais show. Cavandown Farms placed fourth and eighth in the Female Heifer, Born 2004 class with Prairie Cove Miss 429P and Prairie Cove Miss 479P. Rolling Acres Charolais of Shelburne placed seventh in the class with Rollin Acres Emma.
Verberk Charolais of Shelburne placed first in the Female, Born Prior to January 2003, with her 2005 Calf at Foot class, with their cow Rollin Acres Golden Touch.
Rolling Acres Charolais was second in the Yearling Bull class with Rollin Acres Top Notch 9P and third in the Breeder’s Herd Class with their group of four bred by the exhibitor, of both sexes.
At the Royal Winter Fair Simmental show, Shane Williams of Orton had the Junior Champion Female calf with his heifer 3D Miss Black Katie 461P. Jetstream Livestock of Orton was first in the 2005 Bull Calf class with Jestream Black Rebel 2R. Luca Drago of Shelburne placed sixth and seventh in the Female Heifer, Born 2004, with yearlings, Blue P Black Powder and Blue Rap’n Shabang.
The final beef cattle competition was the Galloway show and two Orangeville area farms placed strongly.
Geordawn Farms placed seventh in the Bull Calf, Born 2005 with Geordawn Hal, and Solway Galloways placed second in the Yearling Bull Calf class with Solway Ralph7P.
Solway Farms also placed ninth in the Female Calf, Born in 2005, with Solway Karmella 6R.
In the 2004 Heifer class, Geordawn Farms placed first and third with their entries Geordawn Hillary 5P and Geordawn Houston, while Solway Galloways placed second, fifth and seventh with Soloway Caleigh, Kit Kat and Kiwi. George and Dawn Van Kampen’s Geordawn Hillary 5P went on to be named the Reserve Junior Champion Female.
Solway Galloways took fourth in the Breeder’s Herd class and third in the Get of Sire class.
The Galloway Show hosts a National Junior Showmanship class and several young people from
Dufferin County participated. In the Junior Class Scott Van Kampen was third, Hannah Paquette was fourth, Caleigh Van Kampen was fifth and Courtney Van Kampen was sixth. In the senior class, Jessica Van Kampen was first, Meghan Van Kampen was second, Alicia Van Kampen was sixth and Adam Whyte was eighth.
At the dairy shows, Kentville Holsteins of Shelburne placed 25th with Kentville Gibson Bailey. In the Summer Yearling class they were 13th with Kentville Ast Jacklyn and 15th in the Senior Female class with Kentville Ast Bell.
At the Jersey show, Alcia Van Kampen placed 16 in the Junior Showmanship class. Meghan Van Kampen was 33rd and Jessica Van Kampen 40th in the Senior Showmanship class.
Shelburne shepherd Anne Paquette placed well at the wool competition, finishing fourth in the medium longwool division, white and fifth in the medium longwool division, naturally coloured.
