Where is the equity?

2006-01-05 / Mailbox

This letter is about two kinds of measuring sticks and the inequality that arises from their use.

In Canada, according to law, teenagers from 14 years old can have sex with a person of any age even over 60 years old. In effect the government is saying they are responsible and mature enough to make their own decisions in this matter. Parental authority is not supported by the law but undermined.

The social liberal conservatives of the Mulroney Government were responsible for this law. Any attempts to change this law have been defeated by the Liberal Government.

This shows clearly their anti-family and anti-religious stand.

However, when it comes to crimes like robbing a bank or murder, a youth one day short of 18 years of age is protected from publicity. It is assumed the youth is not yet fully responsible for his actions.

Where is the equity in this? It is not there!

To me the age limit for sexual consent should be increased to 16 or 18 years old and parental authority should be supported not undermined.

For youthful criminals, the age of 18 for accountability should be decreased to 14 or 16 years of age. As well sentences for convicted criminals should fit the crime and will be a deterrent to other potential offenders.

The Government does not carry the sword in vain. Romans 13:4

Karla Homolka was a most notorious criminal but is she really a danger to others after she had served her term in incarceration? (Arrived at by plea bargain)

In my opinion the danger is greater that someone will take the law into their own hands and harm her. But these youthful criminals one day short of 18 years old walk among us in complete anonymity thanks to the Young Offenders Act. They are the greater threat to us.

These are a couple of issues that I would like to hear from the federal candidates on.

Moral issues are the most important ones.

Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people. Proverbs 14:34.
