Fish rebound at home to tie series
MUSKIE ROOKIE Brett McCully gets tripped up in front of the Elora net in game two action on Saturday night. After dropping game one of the series 6-3 in Elora Friday, Shelburne brought the home town crowd to their feet Saturday night, scoring five unanswered goals in the third period to take game two, also by a score of 6-3. Photo/MIKE MALONEY A huge third period effort from the Shelburne Muskies put the Elora Rocks on notice that this series isn't going to be an easy one.
After taking game one 6-3 and leading game two by a score of 3-1 going into the third, Elora was poised to take a commanding lead in their WOAA Senior AA Mens semi final series.
But the never say die Fish had other plans and rebounded with five unanswered goals to take game two by the same 6-3 score that they had lost by the night before.
Game one opened well for the Muskies. With Chris Lawrence doing the duties between the pipes for Shelburne, Matt Lougheed opened the scoring at 4:16 of the first period.
Trevor Downey tagged a powerplay goal early in the second for a short lived two goal cushion.
Starting with a powerplay marker of his own, Elora's Brett Turner scored three unanswered goals for the Rock before Tyler Johnston scored what would prove to be the game winner with 1:46 left to play in the second period.
Mike Sikora would bring Shelburne back within one off the top of three but two more Elora goals including another from Turner into an empty Shelburne net sealed the fate of the Fish on Friday night.
Back to the CDRC for game two on Saturday, Elora came out of the gate charging.
Controlling much of the play through the first two periods, they opened the scoring on a powerplay goal by Rob Bauman at 14:26 of the first.
Adam Bonneveld popped one past Rob Arndt in goal for Elora at 5:33 of the second only to have Turner to come back to haunt them with two more for the Rocks to end the second up 3-1.
In the third, Shelburne came out firing on all cylinders.
Some strong forechecking forced Elora a number of times resulting in the Muskies generating a number of scoring chances which Trevor Downey finally cashed in on the powerplay at 5:20 into the final frame.
Another powerplay marker from Andy Dudun drew the teams even at 33 with just over ten minutes to play.
Pressure around the Rocks net coughed up the puck to Shawn Adams who notched the game winner at 11:18 followed seconds later by another from Chris Greer and company crashing the net, bringing the crowd to their feet.
Lougheed would wrap the scoring with his second of the series at 15:28 to finish the score sheet with Shelburne taking game two 6-3.
Game three action for this best of seven semi final resumes in Fergus at 8:30 p.m. then back to the CDRC on Sunday afternoon where the two teams take to the ice at 2 p.m.
