Amaranth resident 'totally opposed' to wind farm
The following letter to Amaranth Council was submitted for publication:
After the meetings of March 4th and 5th I am now totally opposed to changing the Official Plan to allow wind generation and towers and all associated hardware to be built in Amaranth.
It is unacceptable to me that you would change the Official Plan to allow a private enterprise company, in this case, Canadian Hydro Developers, to make money that will benefit a few and affect every resident of the Township negatively. It is not fair to all and is not in the best interests of the township and the majority of its residents.
My objections are:
I know it will affect my property value negatively. This is totally unacceptable.
The flashing lights are offensive. The noise is offensive
The look is offensive and destroys the rural landscape. I didn't move here to look at or hear these wind generators.
It will adversely affect the wildlife population.
It is not fair to all; only a few will benefit
Adjoining properties will suffer financial loss due to the decline in real estate values.
It will make enemies out of neighbours
This would further affect the use of my property and my airstrip.
These wind turbines will drive people away from this township and adversely affect future necessary growth.
The Township will lose revenue because of a lack of growth
According to statistics, all wind farms in the U.S. have gone under and failed.
Wind generation has not reduced the number of nuclear or coal fired generation facilities required.
There are no positive values in this for me and a great many negatives
The Council is in place to protect our interests. They have not done that for the residents of the 10th Line who have a wall of concrete poles to look at and now who will ever want to live there with concrete poles, lights and noise? It will be impossible to sell these affected homes. A class action lawsuit may be required.
Do not sacrifice this township where we have chosen to live so that some multi-million dollar company can get richer at our expense.
The individuals who have signed up for windmills obviously do not care about their neighbours or the residents of this township.
It is a selfish act and the Mayor, Bob Currie, is a major instigator in bringing and accepting wind power into Amaranth. It is obvious from the meetings of February 3th and 5th that Bob Currie wants as many wind turbines as he can get. He may say he hasn't received any money but we are all aware of how he wants changes to be made to the Official Plan.
This is such an obvious conflict of interest that he should be removed from this whole process immediately, have no further influence on the council members, have no vote, sit in the gallery, and if he has any comments, put his hand up and be recognized by council like any other non-political resident of Amaranth.
If these wind generation projects have failed in other countries, how can they possibly succeed here? The Ontario Government, if this project fails, will have to take it over and operate it at a loss, which will cost Ontario residents more in taxes.
If the statements of individuals brought up at the meetings of February 4th and 5th are correct, windpower is not reliable, it's not efficient.
After a great many years it is still being subsidized by several European countries that thought it would be selfsufficient long ago. It is the least reliable and efficient way of producing electricity.
We would all like to see a clean green alternative to producing cheap electricity. It has to be at the right time and in the right place. It may not be wind generators, but regarding wind generators in Amaranth:
The right place is not Amaranth Township.
I am totally opposed to any changes to the Official Plan to accommodate and accept wind generators in Amaranth.
Remove Mayor Bob Currie immediately from making any decision or voting, on any issues
changing the Official Plan to accept wind generation in the Township of Amaranth.
Stop and reject this whole process now!
Ian. M. Reed
