Credit union sponsors Co-operative Young Leaders

2006-04-13 / Regional News

Peoples Credit Union in Shelburne is participating in Co-operative Young Leaders (CYL), a program intended to develop our future leaders by providing opportunities for young people to learn about themselves and the co-operative way of getting things done, all while having fun.

Through an innovative curriculum, participants are encouraged to strengthen their self-confidence, solve problems, define personal goals, and become an active member of the co-operative and credit union sector.

The eight-day summer curriculum includes guest speakers and excellent

resource people to enhance the program. All exercises and activities are participatory in nature and emphasize teamwork and group development. Sessions are collaborative and participants are encouraged to share in the day-to-day leadership and management of the program.

The CYL program is an integral part of a broader education strategy of the Ontario Co-operative Association, now celebrating its 39th year. The main objective of CYL is to provide a learning environment to involve young people in the province's co-operative credit union sectors.

Peoples Credit Union is now accepting sponsorship applications to the CYL camp program this summer. This sponsorship enhances the Credit Union's motto of "People Helping People." Four students - two from Dufferin County and two from Simcoe - will be selected to attend the CYL summer program. Applicants must be from Dufferin or Simcoe and be between 14 and 18 years of age. Preference will be given to Peoples Credit Union members or teens who are member-recommended.

Each applicant will be required to complete a formal application on a Peoples Credit Union application form now available at the credit union's Barrie, Alcona, Stroud and Shelburne branches, and online at www.peoplescu.ca.

Applications are to be submitted to the chairperson of the committee by May 15. The sponsorship committee will require an interview with all finalists. Selections will be based on demonstrated leadership skills and community involvement.
