The penalty for speeding in the province will cost drivers more and repeat offenders who have lost driving privileges will suffer longer courtordered driving suspensions.

The new fines, for speeding over 30-34 km/h over the posted limit increases to $210 from the old fine of $135.

Drivers speeding 34 km/h over will now pay $238.

The Highway Traffic Act was amended to permit progressively longer court-ordered driver's licence suspensions for persons convicted of speeding 50 km/h or more over the posted limit more than once in a five-year period.
