Stewardess flies high in other ways
The international musical career of Beeton's own Judy Kanyo, who's no stranger to Dufferin, has taken off faster than any of the jets she's been flying in as a flight attendant (purser) for the past several years.
Within months of her first major stage appearance as a backup to the Good Brothers at Bradford in 2004, while she was still recording her first CD, Inside Out, Judy had taken Shelley Buffitt's "Darlin' It's Over" close to the top of the European and Indie charts. Before that, she appeared at the Honeywood Potato Festival as one of the featured vocalists.
It's no small honour that Judy performed at the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in Jackson, Tenn., at their request in a special event featuring many established performers last August. There, she says, she had numerous requests for albums and autographs. Also in August, she performed at the Lonestar Country Music Association's Best of Texas show.
In February 2005, she performed on the Nashville Video Showcase (PAX network) hosted by Jimmy and Lorraine Smart; in May at the Jamboree on the Mountain Festival in Monteagle,TN, with artists including Ernie Ashworth, Hal Willis, Erin Hay, Jimmy Cash and others. Judy was asked to do a radio interview in Winchester, TN, at radio station WCDT 1340 with Billy Walker (Grand Ol' Opry) and Mayf Nutter as part of her appearance. In June, Judy performed in Nashville once again during Fanfair, hosted by Hondo Austin. The next day she spent the afternoon with Grand Ol' Opry Legend Charlie Louvin, a highlight of her trip.
Judy has been named No. 1 on the Mainstream Indies and Majors chart (June 15 to 30, 2005) that monitors airplay in Europe, Australia and New Zealand (approximately 750 stations). The chart lists in order the top 235 country artists: Judy
was No. 4 in Australia, No. 15 in New Zealand, No. 1 in France, 10 in Germany, 6 in Belgium, 7 in Poland, 37 in United Kingdom, 19 in Denmark, and No. 25 in the Netherlands. This was considered phenomenal after she had spent only six months in the singing business.
Some Dufferin musical aficionados might recognize Judy as one of three judges at the finals in the Music Talks karaoke idol contest at Main Event Center in 2004, along with Buffitt and producer Randy Moore.
Last December, Judy's Christmas single - Mistletoe, My Cowboy and Me - hit No. 1 for airplay on the European radio, and remained there for five solid weeks. And she's never looked back. Now she has signed with the Mega International label in Nashville for her second CD album, a 12-track original with a new twist: Mega producer Doc Holliday has decided to include a DVD with the album, featuring Judy plus an inside look at how the album was produced.
Beyond the new album, Judy has some major gigs (appearances), including one in Japan and a headlined appearance at the sold-out Foston Easter concert in New Zealand. Following that, on June 24, she'll probably be in Palafrugall Costa Brava, Spain, where she's on the nominations list for the European Country Music Association's "artist of the year" and "female vocalist of the year." She has two nominated entries - Darlin' It's Over, and Mistletoe My Cowboy and Me.
If you fly Air Canada in May, you'll be able to hear selections from Judy's first album, Inside Out, on all audio equipped flights.
Judy says she has always enjoyed singing, but hadn't considered doing her own CD until she met singer/ songwriter/ paramedic Shelley Buffitt of Dufferin, who introduced her to producer Randy Moore of Grimsby in 2004. Darlin', Judy's keynote
song, is a track from Shelley's own second album, Bad Side of Town, but performed in Judy's unique style.
