Crafters Market opens this weekend
There's a new market in town for treasure hunters and it will start this weekend and run until September 20.
The Crafters Market will be on Mill Street between Broadway and Little York Street every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be run by Terry Goulding of Grand Valley.
Businesses along Mill Street have endorsed the idea with one stipulation. The vendors cannot be "flea market"-style vendors and should be crafters or artisans selling items that aren't available in retail stores and cannot re-sell retail articles.
Currently there are about 20 vendors ready to set up the market, that won't infringe on the Farmer's Market, as produce and plants will not be sold at it.
"The BIA feels that this event, held on a weekly basis, would add to the exposure to the downtown," states a letter from BIA co-ordinator Jacqueline Bayley.
"Access to any of the parking for tenants would not be affected as there are alternative entrances to access the lots in question and any professional business located on the street are not open on Saturdays at this time."
The Orangeville Farmer's Market also supports this idea.
"The Market has many crafter booth requests and the goal is to keep the Farmer's Market ratio of vendors strong," said Janice Gooding, market manager. "Shoppers can visit the market location at Town Hall, plus the Mill Street Crafters Market and in doing so will be walking further into the downtown," she said.
Orangeville Council approved the motion for the road closure and included in the motion that a report from the BIA needs to come back to council after the event has finished.
Councillor Ken Manwell said he thinks the two markets will work in harmony and enhance the downtown.
