Junior B Northmen continue winning ways
Three weeks and six games in, the MacMaster Pontiac Buick GMC Junior B Northmen continue to chew their way through the competition, adding another pair of weekend wins to set their record at a perfect 6-0.
Friday night, a combination of speed and conditioning
helped them - in the words of assistant coach Blaine Burman, "run the ball around Elora", on the way to an 11-4 romp over the Mohawks on the road.
Monday night, Owen Sound came calling and for three minutes in the first, held a 1-0 lead over the Northmen.
A short handed goal by Spencer Joyce put the Rams on notice; it was going to be a long night.
Two goals from James Reid combined with a single from Frankie Collins brought the crowd alive and sent the teams into the second with Orangeville up 4-1.
Owen Sound's Adam Jones added his first of two, just over six minutes into the mid-frame but again the Northmen scoring machine kicked into gear.
Dan Lefler responded in kind less than a minute later while the McNutt brothers, Aaron and Braiden each added one at 11:14 and 9:58, respectively.
Rookie Jay Card continued to prove to be a lethal sniper on the move, cranking two more to wrap up the second with Orangeville up 9-2.
A pair of goals off the top of three seemed to buoy the Rams but an unassisted beauty from Robbie Koekkoek quickly burst that bubble.
Before long the deflated Rams degraded the third to a donnybrook seeing both teams combining for 136 minutes in penalties during the final period alone.
Reid and Card would each add their third goals of the night to wrap the scoring with Orangeville posting their sixth consecutive win, doubling up 126 over Owen Sound at the final buzzer.
After the game, Burman said the way the third evolved was to be expected. Out played and down by five late in the game, Owen Sound's goon tactics came as no surprise.
He is encouraged by the play of the squad to date. In particular to the way the players are buying into the system. "They are listening to us and things are working," he says.
The team now goes on the road for their next two outings. Saturday May 20th sees the Northmen in Windsor where they meet the AKO Fratmen for their only meeting of the season.
Thursday May 25 puts them in Owen Sound for a rematch with the Rams before heading home Saturday for a 7 p.m. start against Welland.
