Little early interest in council posts

With less than six months to go until this year's municipal elections, there appears to be a dearth of interest in the 25 council positions within Dufferin's five townships.

But staff personnel at the township offices say things will change dramatically by the end of the summer.

At Grand Valley, in the East Luther Grand Valley Township municipal office where no one has registered for the election as yet, Heather Ritchie said to expect registrations to begin in September.

"In Grand Valley, they don't usually register until about September," she said. Nor, apparently, had anyone indicated they'll step aside.

Melancthon Township might be a little ahead of ELGV. There, clerk-treasurer Denise Holmes said Wednesday registrations usually begin in August. In Melancthon, Mayor Garry Matthews had previously indicated he might not seek another term, but no one has served notice that they would oppose him if he did run.

In the meantime, the only person to have registered for the fall election has been one-time councillor and deputy reeve D.C. Broderick, who has thrown his hat in the empty ring for the position of deputy mayor.

In Amaranth, it's rumoured that Mayor Bob Currie has decided not to run, and that Deputy Mayor Don MacIver would seek to replace him. But that's just rumour for now. No one has registered for any of the council positions there. However, the tone of recent council meetings has been such that it would appear most of the present slate will seek another term.

At East Garafraxa, Mayor (and currently county warden) Earl Lennox has announced he's not seeking another term. The present deputy mayor, Allen Taylor, has registered his name as the would-be successor to Mr. Lennox.

Mr. Taylor, the present pastor of Community of Christ Church in Grand Valley, is a retired secondary school teacher who has served many years on township council, was public liaison officer for Dufferin's waste management study, and is a past chairman of Rural Ontario Municipal Association.

In Mulmur, there's already a race in store for mayor, with Deputy Mayor Gord Montgomery facing a challenge from Paul Mills.

The only other candidate thus far is Sue Snider, who has filed for deputy mayor
