Primrose youth recognized by Lions Club
Photo/LAVINIA KERR LIONS QUEST AWARD - Ron Finlay, a spokesperson for the Lions Quest program presented Renee Couture, a grade 8 student at Primrose Elementary School, with the student volunteer award. Renee Courture, a grade 8 student at Primrose Elementary School, was presented last week with the first-ever student volunteer award by the Lions Club's district Lions-Quest committee and The Past District Governors' Association.
The club is presenting an annual scholarship award of $500 to a student in grade 8 who exemplifies the ideals of community service to others.
Mary Roberts, a teacher at the school who nominated Renee, said she was selected this year because she is a natural leader in the school.
The letter sent to the selection committee details Renee's involvement in the school acting as an organizer for the Lions-Quest project, encouraging school spirit by promoting respectful behaviour and promoting the school's goal of healthy living.
Renee is also involved in the school council and helps out in the schoolyard during recess, the lunch room monitor and is the head of the bus patrol.
She is said to be a topnotch fundraiser and spirit days leader, both as a participant and coordinator.
In the community she is a volunteer as a Sunday school teacher and a Shelburne minor soccer referee and is in the Air Cadets.
Primrose Elementary principal Rosemarie Armstrong says Renee's hard work and efforts and her leadership abilities are recognized by this award, which she said serves as an example for others interested in volunteering to follow.
