Teacher taking it off for cancer
Last week, students at Orangeville District Secondary School (ODSS) watched 10 teachers shave their heads for cancer.
The teachers' efforts managed to raise close to $10,000 and Linda Hartree will be joining her shaved colleagues when she reaches her own goal.
"I want to raise $10,000 - myself," she said.
She hopes to reach that goal before the deadline set for June 26 and says it is attainable if 500 Orangeville residents contribute $20 each.
"It's not impossible," she says. "This town has a very generous nature."
An educator in Orangeville for over 30 years, Ms. Hartree knows there are parents of students attending ODSS who were once her students and she hopes they come forward to donate.
This coming September will mark her final year as a teacher and the long hair has been a personal trademark during her career.
"I used to be able to sit on my hair," she said, noting that her last haircut, a trim, was more than a year ago.
Ms. Hartree believes finding a cure for cancer is worth the sacrifice and wants as much support from the community as possible.
The donations by ODSS this year will go toward breast cancer research, while Ms. Hartree's tresses will be donated to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients.
"Cancer can be cured," said Ms. Hartree. "Please donate and be part of the cure."
