Dufferin County revels in Canada Day celebrations
Photos by/LAVINIA KERR, LANA FLEMING and MIKE MALONEY The weather tried to wreak havoc on plans for the Canada Day celebrations across the region, last Saturday, but failed.
Prior to the late-day summer storm, the sun shone brightly on the pancake breakfast at the Shelburne Legion in the morning and for the crowd that gathered later in the afternoon at the Orangeville Legion, with Mayor Drew Brown, Dufferin Peel-WellingtonGrey MPP John Tory and a representative from Dufferin-Caledon MP David Tilson's office, in attendance for Orangeville's ceremony.
Sandhill Pipe and Drum band accompanied the colour party prior to opening remarks by Legion President Frank Lomack and the singing of O Canada.
Despite the rain, high winds and lightning that moved into the region during the evening, the fireworks display continued as scheduled.
Earlier in the evening, the talent competition had to be moved inside the agricultural centre because the outdoor stage was too wet for the performers to use.
Event organizer Wendy Walker said OC Sound, from Orangeville, saved the day by relocating all of the sound and equipment, and kept things on schedule.
The winners of the talent contest were judged in age categories and are as follows:
12 and under: first place, Double Trouble (dance), David Moore and Saskia Raparance; second, Melissa Molick (dance); third, Academy of Performing Arts (dance), Sarah Nolasco, Leah Goodbrand, Danielle Dixon; fourth, Talia Preziuso (instrument).
13 -17 years: first place, Sofie Moore (dance); second, Academy of Performing Arts (dance), Brittany Walbourne, Brittany Bruyea, Sydney Glaeser; third, Remote Control (band), Adam and Jacob (with dad Frank on drums)
Over 18 years: first place, Knights of the Round (band), Christopher Prins, Rebecca Gault, Matthew Heath; second, Alex Hill, Robbie Vanbarneveld, Tyler Reed.
