B's sweep Red Devils
GUARD DUTY. Northmen defenders Matt Noble and Robbie Koekkoek take up position in front of Nick Rose in playoff action against Wallaceburg on Saturday night. Photo/MIKE MALONEY One, two, three and the MacMaster Pontiac Buick GMC Junior B Northmen have advanced through to the second round of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior B playoffs by sweeping the Wallaceburg Red Devils 3-0.
Playing at home for game three on Saturday night, many questioned the spectre of whether they may see another penaltyfilled blowout like game two.
This match however started off much different. Wallaceburg played a much more disciplined game, with the two teams going scoreless for the first half of the opening period.
Orangeville's deadly power-play was given the chance to start things off, and that they did with Jay Card teaming up with Jesse Leitch and James Reid to open the scoring at 8:31. Card would add another minutes later followed by Joel Rennie and Reid to set the pace with Orangeville up 4-0 to end the first.
A flurry of goals off the top of two by both teams opened up the scoreboard.
Reid would tally for two more while Spencer Joyce, Braedon McNutt, Trevor VanAlstine, Matt McNutt and Leitch would add singles to offset four from Wallaceburg to put the score at 11-4 in favour of the Northmen going into the third.
The Red Devils refused to concede lightly and played lacrosse instead of the intimidation game they tried in game two. For their efforts they were rewarded with three more goals
Orangeville would also answer with three of their own on singles from Garrett Kerr and Matt McMurray while Matt McNutt added his second to wrap the scoring with 1:14 left to play, giving the Northmen a 14-7 win to take the series.
Assistant coach Blaine Burman was pleased with the effort of the boys, wrapping it up quite simply, "that helps." He said anytime you sweep a series, it gives you a bit of a break and allows you to rest up a bit, heal and get prepared for your next series.
For round two, Orangeville will face off against Spartan starting at home on Friday night with an 8 p.m. start at the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre.
