Free corn cobs coming to Farmer's Market this Saturday, July 22

2006-07-20 / Local News

Visitors to the Orangeville Farmers' Market will be able to enjoy some fresh and free corn-onthe cob this Saturday, July 22, courtesy of the Dufferin Federation of Agriculture.

And rumour has it that local politicians may be husking corn, just for you.

The Dufferin federation would like this event to highlight the role of our farm industry in the 125 years of Dufferin County.

Thanks to Tractor, Turf and Trail of Orangeville, Oprah, Ontario's Ambassador for Agriculture, will be visiting the market to help us celebrate 125 years of agriculture in Dufferin.

Oprah is a robotic, redheaded doll who will be circulating in the crowd on her John Deere tractor. She would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about agriculture. She is expected to be at the market from 9 to noon, so grab the kids and come out and meet Oprah.

Almost half of Canada's population farmed 100 years ago, but today less than two per cent of our population are farming.

In 1900, the average farmer produced enough food for only 10 people. Those people spent 50 cents of every dollar they earned on food. Today, a farmer can feed 120 consumers and those consumers spend only 12.5 cents of every dollar earned on food. One of the lowest grocery bills in the world.

Oprah can give you lots of information like this on Canadian farming. A lucky 50 or more market visitors that do talk to Oprah can win a free booklet, "The Real Dirt on Farming" that is chucked full of valuable information on Canadian agriculture - a great resource when the kids get back to school in September.

The Real Dirt on Farming is published by the Ontario Farm Animal Council, the same people who look after Oprah.

Visit www.ofac.org for more details about Oprah or www.farmissues.com for more details on Canadian farming.

Can't get away to the cottage?

Why not come out on Saturday and enjoy some chit-chat with Oprah and some free corn-on-the-cob too!

The Farmers' Market is located beside the town hall at Broadway and Second Street.
