Oaks funding announced
The Ontario government has announced funding of $840,000 for the first 12 of 22 affordable housing units at the Mel Lloyd Centre in Shelburne.
But the August 25 announcement might have created some confusion, as the funding had already been completed last spring - the 12 units were completed in May and are now all but fully occupied.
As well, the funding was under a federal provincial program, Canada Ontario Affordable Housing Program (COAHP), and capital costs for the 12 units totalled $928,000, according to Nancy MacMillan of Canada Mortgage and Housing.
At the Mel Lloyd Centre, Dufferin Oaks Administrator Brenda Urbanski said Tuesday that the initial 12 units were an initiative of the March of Dimes in co-operation with the County of Dufferin - six units each.
Then, for those units, the County had secured funding through COAHP. Consequently, the March of Dimes involvement was transferred to the added 10 units. Those are now under construction.
Ms. Urbanski said the final 10 units are budgeted at about $1.06-million, resulting in a total capital investment of $1,928,000 for all 22.
Of that, the March of Dimes contribution is $450,000 through the Ministry of Health. The county is funding a shortfall, and Shelburne is waiving property taxes for a year.
The federal-provincial program is through the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the federal Human Resources and Social Development Canada, Ms. Urbanski said.
