Drive Away Hunger tractor to stop locally

2006-10-05 / Local News

Woolwich Dairy Inc. is a tour stop on Saturday, October 14, for Farm Credit Canada's Drive Away Hunger campaign.

The tractor will enter Dufferin at Rosemont and proceed to Primrose, turning south on Highway 10 and west along Broadway and south on C Line to the dairy at 425 Richardson Road.

The community is invited to drop off non-perishable food at the Woolwich Dairy any time between now and Oct. 14, as well as to add their food to the tractor at the dairy the day the tour is in Orangeville.

The campaign's rationale lies in the fact that while Ontario produces some of the best food in the world, thousands of families still don't have enough to eat.

It's easy to assume that people involved in agriculture - those responsible for feeding the world and providing food of the highest quality standards - always have enough to eat.

But that's not always the case.

The campaign's climax will be World Food Day, on Oct. 16, which provides a great opportunity to fill empty plates in our communities. This day commemorates the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization by the United Nations in 1945, creates awareness about hunger and encourages people to take action.

This year, Farm Credit Canada's Drive Away Hunger tour is provincewide, Oct. 10 to 16. FCC employees will drive two 100-h.p. tractors with 16- foot trailers - one from Windsor, one from Ottawa - both heading for Guelph as they tour the province collecting food for the hungry. The goal is to collect more than 100,000 pounds of food for rural food banks in Ontario.

FCC employees, customers, sponsors and community partners invite you to join in the journey. Local residents are invited

to cheer on the volunteers as they tour through each community.
