A new book, "East Garafraxa: A History," will be officially launched later this month in Marsville.

When the cold winter winds blow and snow fills the concession lines in East Garafraxa, a stormstayed traveller might be forgiven for wondering why on earth Garafraxa's roads head northwest, on a different bearing from the roads in the neighboring townships of East Luther and Amaranth. Were they specifically designed to catch snow and impede traffic?

For the answer to that and other questions about East Garafraxa, Steven J. Brown and Krista A. Taylor

have looked back to the earliest days of what we now know as East Garafraxa. From those early times to the present, Mr. Brown and Ms. Taylor have brought to life, East Garafraxa: A History.

"I blame it on my Grandmother - she told such great stories!" is how author Steve Brown explains his lifelong interest in the history of Dufferin County. Born and raised on a farm in what's now part of Orangeville, Mr. Brown worked for Thomson newspapers in Orangeville and Cornwall, and was editor of the Orangeville Banner before becoming the Archivist at

the Dufferin County Museum and Archives in 1993.

Through the pages, readers will develop a new appreciation not only for the settlers and the legacy they left, but also of the trials and successes of those who came after.

East Garafraxa: A History is a testament to the people who have lived, loved and worked in that wonderful place.

Krista Taylor, raised on the family farm, has been happy to call East Garafraxa home. She began the history book project as a teenager and that was the beginning of her career in the heritage

field. Since 2003, she has been the Archivist at the Port Hope Archives.

The book launch is to take place on Sunday, October 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Marsville Community Hall, located at County Road 3 and the 13th Line of East Garafraxa. The authors will be on hand to sign copies upon request.

Copies of East Garafraxa: A History, will be available to purchase for $40 plus GST. After Oct. 29, the book may be purchased at the Township of East Garafraxa Municipal Office and the Dufferin County Museum and Archives.
