Consistency needed

Re your editorial on possible highway changes ("Maybe there's hope yet," 28 September), I draw your attention to Highway 10 south of Shelburne.

Going south from Highway 89, the highway has two lanes, but once over a small rise the southbound side suddenly narrows to a single lane. I was once caught offguard by this un-warned change during a summer day in which a large number of vehicles were travelling south. To move to the left (through) lane was impossible, as no one was willing to yield.

Southbound First Street in Orangeville is another example of a major discontinuity. Some drivers consider it a challenge racetrack.

Any traffic engineer will tell you that highways (and sidewalks, too) must be consistent. If there are two lanes south, there must continue to be two lanes south. If a sidewalk runs along one side of a street in this block, the next block must have the same arrangement.

I sometimes wonder who designed the paved streets and highways in Dufferin County. Certainly not a traffic engineer.
