Wellington-Dufferin- Guelph Public Health has received the first two laboratory confirmed cases of Influenza A for the 2006-07 season. One case of Influenza A was reported in North Wellington and the other in Guelph.

Influenza or flu is caused by a virus. The virus causes a sudden onset of fever, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, cough, and weakness that usually lasts two to 10 days.

A cough and weakness can last up to six weeks making physical activity and daily tasks difficult. In some cases, it can cause serious complications. Diarrhea and vomiting do not usually occur with influenza.

A few community flu shot clinics are still scheduled or you can call your physician or WDG Public Health for an appointment.

Tips on how to help control the spread of the flu virus:

• Wash your hands using soap and running water. Lather for at least 15 seconds, scrub thoroughly and rinse.

• Cover your mouth with your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.

• If you feel ill, stay home and avoid crowds.
