Bears stumble in home opener
Photo/MIKE MALONEY ODSS BEARS veteran Cory Shody works his way through the Celtic defence in District 10 Senior Boys basketball action in Orangeville on Tuesday afternoon. The District 10 boys basketball season is now officially underway but game one for the ODSS Scarlett Bears ended with a different result than had been hoped for.
Playing host to Bishop MacDonnell, Orangeville was looking to atone for last year's less than successful season where they ended up seventh in the eight team division.
Bishop MacDonnell set the pace for the game early, getting out to a 11-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Bears, however, were not without their chances. Missed shots cancelled out many scoring opportunities in not just the first quarter, but throughout the game.
Cory Shody put a spark into Orangeville's offence early in the second, driving in through traffic from the left for two followed by a single on a foul.
A string of singles from Tom DeGroot, Fakhar Khan, Adam Hawkins and Paul Levesque would draw the Bears back within striking distance, down 18-11 going into the half.
J.P. Gunter dropped a three pointer from the two o'clock position to bring the Bears as close as they would get at 18-14, coming out of the halftime break.
Another pair came from Levesque when Kahn found him down low beneath the basket but that would be all the offence Orangeville would muster through the third while the Celtic machine continued rolling to a 33-16 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Levesque would find the range for a three pointer from the corner followed moments later with Shody converting a rebound into two more for Orangeville.
Bishop Mac countered basket for basket to maintain their lead heading into the final minutes.
Hawkins dropped two more for the Bears from under the basket while a pair off the hands of Travis Irwin from the foul line wrapped up the Orangeville scoring with just over a minute left to play.
When the final buzzer sounded, it was Bishop MacDonnell taking the win by a score of 48-25.
ODSS coach Koven Padayachee was not overly impressed by the play of his charges in their opener. "It was a step backwards for us. There's no reason we can't play with these guys. Our guys didn't seem to have their heads in the game while Bishop Mac obviously wanted it more, they came to play."
Noting the parity in the league this season, Koven has set the bar higher for ODSS this season. After last year's poor showing, he feels that with the team he has, there is no reason that they can't finish posting a top five finish and hopefully parlay that into a successful playoff run.
