Big Brothers, Big Sisters gets funding for program
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Dufferin received $25,000 in funding on Dec. 15 through the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors program.
In partnership with Family Transition Place and the Canadian Federation of University Women, Big Brothers and Big Sisters will start a program called Go Girls.
The program will connect girls in grades 6, 7 and 8 with a senior who can teach them about positive selfesteem.
“At Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Dufferin, we are very excited to be receiving the new Horizons Grant,” Nancy Stallmach, executive director, said. “Through this Go Girls program we hope to help guide girls through the difficult pre-teen years by matching them with senior women mentors.”
MP David Tilson presented the cheque to Ms. Stallmach on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development.
“It is my pleasure to announce today this New Horizon’s funding that will help reduce the risk of social isolation among older adults,” said Mr. Tilson. “My compliments go out to all those involved with Big Brothers and Sisters of Dufferin County for their innovative thinking that will encourage our seniors to contribute their skills, experience and wisdom through projects like this one.”
The funding will sustain the program for one year and if Big Brothers and Big Sisters can obtain more funding they will continue the program.
“We look forward to hearing from any women who would like to make a difference by being a sympathetic friend and positive role model,” said Ms. Stallmach.
