‘Doing nothing not the answer’

2006-12-28 / Mailbox

This letter is in response to the article by Mandi Hargrave in your December 14th edition, headed “Mono’s lack of hunting bylaw.”

As residents who live adjacent to the conservation area in which Mrs. Schmid was tragically killed, we feel that at the very least there should be proper signage in place during the hunting season.

A notice published in the local paper but if you fail to see that , you would have no idea when hunting is taking place. We have had hunters in our yard and on our neighbour’s property behind us, neither of which is conservation forest, and it is frightening to be out walking and come across them.

We are not against legalized hunting if it is done in a designated area and away from residential areas. The conservation area where Mrs. Schmid lost her life is surrounded by homes and many people walk there throughout the year.

If there had been a sign posted at each entrance this fatality would not have occurred. If cost is the issue, then raise the fee for a hunting permit to help defray the cost of proper signage — the loss of a life is too big a price to pay.

There was a time when this conservation area was considered remote but that is no longer the case.

It is imperative that this kind of tragedy is never repeated. Either ban hunting in this particular conservation area or post proper signage to inform the public that they are in danger.

Doing nothing is not the answer.
