Free fishing weekend planned
Fishing enthusiasts across the province will be able to enjoy a free weekend of fishing in any public waters on Feb. 24-25, during the first winter Ontario Family Fishing Weekend.
It's the result of a new partnership between the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), who will be taking more responsibility to organize more free family fishing weekends.
"Many Ontarians enjoy winter fishing as a sport and social activity, and parents and others across the province can take this opportunity to introduce children and young adults to the fun of fishing," said Natural Resources Minister David Ramsay. "The winter family fishing weekend is a great time to learn from experienced anglers about fishing, safety and conservation."
Conservation licence limits in the 2005-06 Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary will still be in effect during the weekend.
"Ontario Family Fishing Weekend is the province's flagship outdoor event that works to promote recreational fishing," said OFAH President John Ford.
"The original concept for Ontario Family Fishing Weekend was presented by the OFAH and we are pleased that the Ministry of Natural Resources has increased opportunities to participate in this outstanding program."
Terming ice fishing good family fun, he said the OFAH "is proud to expand our partnership with the ministry and the outdoor industry to help introduce the new winter edition of Ontario Family Fishing Weekend."
Local anglers have an advantage because they won't have to go far. The ice huts are already in place at Island Lake, one of the few locations in southern Ontario, due to the late arrival of cold weather this winter.
