2007-02-01 / Sports

The Orangeville Athletics began their 2007 indoor soccer season off January 28th, soundly beating their opponents, Argentina FC, with a score of 5-1 at the Brampton Fairgrounds.

The Athletics began the game with just enough players to field a team and capitalized early in the first half with a successful penalty kick from player/coach Peter Kirchberger.

Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Athletics' stalwart defensive line composed of Rob Rovella, Rory Wilson and Dave Murray, fended off the opposition attempts at the net.

The Athletics ended off the half up 2-0 after a second goal was slotted in by Gord Willemse.

The second half saw Argentina FC take to the field with a stronger showing but the Athletics prevailed with 3 additional goals courtesy of James Willemse, Darren Skipper and Gord Willemse putting them at 5-0.

Athletics keeper, Dan Cornelius, was kept busier in the second half making several saves off the opposition assaults.

Close to the end of the second half, despite the efforts of the combined team efforts, Argentina FC managed to sink their one and only goal.

Overall, with the efforts put out by the Athletics defensive line composed of Dave Murray, Rob Rovella, Chris Deschamp, Rory Wilson, and keeper, Dan Cornelius, the team appeared strong on that front.

Exhibiting precision passing skills, midfielders - James Willemse, Peter Kirchberger, Darren Skipper, Gord Willemse, and forward Kenny Weijers, kept the game pressing on the opposition net.

With the effort exhibited in their opening game, the team is looking forward to a successful indoor season.
