Health unit warns of ear-piercing risks

2007-02-22 / Local News

Wellington-Dufferin- Guelph Public Health has advised area residents to be aware of the risks when piercing ears and other parts of the body.

Recently, public health inspectors uncovered improper use of an ear-piercing gun in an area establishment. Piercing guns are designed for use on earlobes only and not on other areas of the body. Incorrect use of equipment can damage the pierced area, tear the skin, and complicate healing. If anyone has had a body part - other than the ear lobe - pierced with a piercing gun, please contact WDG Public Health.

Inspectors also found that equipment was improperly sterilized.

"Although there is a low risk of infection, complications can range from minor skin irritations to serious blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B and C, as well as HI," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Doug Kittle.

Public Health strongly encourages operators to use ear-piercing guns with presterilized disposable capsules.

According to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the ear-piercing gun must not come in contact with the ear. It must be used only on the earlobe and not on other parts of the body.

When getting a piercing, ensure that the operator:

+ properly disinfects piercing equipment;

+ washes hands before and after procedure;

+ uses single-use gloves for each client;

+ uses approved skin antiseptic to disinfect the piercing area;

+ marks the site with an iodine pen only;

+ provides verbal and written after-care instructions to take home, and

+ keeps a record of your piercing. This includes the date, your name, and your contact information. This will be used by Public Health if follow-up is needed.
