The 'fine line' was crossed
I suppose when you live long enough you feel a little jaded sometimes by events; a general feeling that you have seen everything and nothing is surprising to you anymore.
I must admit I was surprised a little bit by the actions of several students, some apparently on student council or on committees at Robert F. Hall Secondary School.
Having raised our son in separate schools all his life, it was a tough decision to forego R. F. Hall and send him to a local public secondary school.
The deciding factor, even before this incident, however, was the fact that students at Hall (the ones we knew and their friends) perceived themselves to be superior and/or above their public peers.
Needless to say, we didn't want our son exposed to such an environment and enrolled him locally.
The unacceptable actions of the Hall students, and especially the student council, seems to vindicate our choice.
While not denigrating all students at R. F. Hall, there seems to be a definite undercurrent of dissatisfaction with administration rules, and acceptable behaviour. Respect by students for the administration should be automatic, with healthy give and take rapport resulting in a healthy school environment. At R. F. Hall it sounds like anything but.
I commend the school administration and board for their quick and decisive actions. I believe the students involved got off lucky and lightly and, future college/university aspirations aside, should look at this as a definite wake-up call and learning experience. There's a fine line between free speech and complete idiocy and it was definitely crossed here.
