Royals District 4 champs for second year in row
Tuesday night, the CDDHS Royals Senior Boys basketball team wrapped up their 2006-07 season with a bittersweet win over the Wellington Heights Wolverines to lay claim to the District 4 championship title for the second year in a row.
Having advanced to the final after defeating Erin 51- 31 the week before, Shelburne started the night on a low point having had their OFFSA aspirations vanish a day earlier, dropping a 58-54 decision to St James.
Possibly sensing a hidden opportunity, Wellington Heights popped a pair right off the opening tip off to set the pace.
It wasn't long until Shelburne responded in kind and with Miles Montgomery, Johan Henry and Jacob Bryan leading the Royals charge, both squads swapped hoops through the first quarter to roll into the second with Shelburne out front 18-16.
Again, Wellington Heights came out firing to reclaim a short lived lead before the Royal offence finally found their groove. Bryan prevailed over loose ball on the floor then Jay Shannon pair from under the basket put Shelburne back into a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the game.
A beautiful 1-2-3 zig-zag passing play from Montgomery to Bryan then in to Shannon set the pace for Royals scoring spree.
A pick and run down the middle by Henry, a rebound from Shannon and three from the sideline off Montgomery was capped with Jon Chenier going in and under the Wolverine defenders to end the half with Shelburne holding a 36-27 lead.
The Royals continued to protect their lead through the third quarter, adding 18 more for a 54-38 advantage heading into the final frame.
A trio of three pointers for Wellington would be the highlight of their game in the final quarter but Shelburne countered with a succession of doubles and singles from the foul line to build up their lead.
When Bryan, Montgomery, Henry, Shannon and Sales took to the floor for the final minute, their last minute as Royals, they added another pair to seal the scoreboard at 69-49 and with the win, clinched their second consecutive District 4 Senior Boys basketball title.
