Melancthon opts for by-election
      Melancthon Township Council has decided to have a by-election if necessary to fill the vacancy created by the death of mayor Ron Dillman shortly after he was elected to the office. Under the Municipal Act, the council had the option of appointing a replacement or of holding an election.

Amaranth setting budget piecemeal

Entertaining schoolkids in a crisis
      When Rosemary Coles started her morning's journey to college on February 15, she had no idea of the adventure that trip would bring. An adult student taking a refresher course at Humber, Rosemary's daily journey was a temporary chore for four weeks and this day was the end of that session. So, she was in a mood to wrap it all up as she made her way down the Gore Road.

Overall wind production remained high during storm
      Last Thursday night's icing conditions affected output at the Melancthon I and Kingsbridge wind farms, but over-all wind production at the four wind farms across the province remained at better than 50 per cent of capacity. By mid-afternoon Friday, all four farms were producing normally.

Lexie was inspired to donate her hair after seeing in the newspaper a few years ago another young girl donate her hair. Lexie has been growing her hair ever since, and cousin Kennedy wanted to help as well. The girls raised $655 in pledges for the organization.

Citizens' commission tries to make an impact
      Monday night was the last time the Citizens' Commission on Finance would meet before Orangeville council passed the 2007 budget, and members were in a hurry to pass a number of motions to try to have more of an effect on this year's tax rate.

Murder mystery train tour coming
      The Credit Valley Explorer Tour Train plans to present an exciting murdermystery dinner on April 21 that will feature a 1940's big band theme on April 21st. Passengers are being invited to dress up in their best Glenn Miller-era outfits and be part of the fun on the special charter tour.

Subdivision expanding on College Avenue
      An established subdivision in Orangeville's College Avenue neighbourhood is about to expand with little resistance or acceptance from surrounding residents. The expansion is phase 2 of the Edgewood Valley Subdivision in the northwest area of town,which encompasses College Avenue, Courtney Crescent and Jeffers Court.

Regulations for personal wind turbines coming soon
      When a resident on Orangeville's Edelwild Drive erected a personal wind turbine in his backyard last July, the town's planning staff were forced to begin developing a bylaw to establish regulations for such wind energy systems. The issue was first brought to council's attention when the personal wind turbine was erected to the chagrin of a neighbour who filed a complaint with the Town.

Brampton man dead in Highway 10 crash
      A Brampton man was pronounced dead at the scene of a collision on Highway 10 in Melancthon last Friday afternoon. Thomas Paterson, 63, was driving a southbound 1991 Chevrolet sedan when it crossed the center line and collided with a northbound 2004 Honda SUV.

Museum to host March Break crafts for kids
      There'll be fun for all ages at the Dufferin County Museum and Archives next week during March Break. A full week of activities offered mornings (10 to noon) and afternoon (2 to 4) sessions. Cost for each workshop is $8 per child and includes all supplies and materials required to make and complete each project.

'High miler' clocked at 163 km/h on '10'
      Last Saturday afternoon, a Caledon OPP officer observed a motor vehicle traveling at what appeared to be an extreme high speed on Highway 10 near The Grange Side Road in Caledon. Martyn Cousin, 51, of Collingwood is accused of speeding 163 km/h in the 80-km/h zone. He is to appear in court April 19.
