Kennel Club meets at Ag Centre to decide top dog
It was a dog-gone great weekend for the Orangeville and District Kennel Club, as over 600 dogs and their owners descended on the Agriculture Centre for the annual dog show.
The three days of shows marked the 59th, 60th and 61st confirmation show, beginning on Friday and wrapping up on Sunday.
Ellen Mitchell, spokesperson for the club, said the turnout was outstanding considering that the weather wasn't co-operating on Friday, with visitors coming from as far away as New York State.
Exhibitors were on hand and the club gave away dog towels as an appreciation gift.
Dogs are judged in the ring by class and the judges select based on a standard that includes how a dog looks and acts while on display. Handlers set the dog in a stance for judging called stacking.
According to Ms. Mitchell showing dogs is a popular past-time for the Kennel Club.
Friday's Best in Show results were: a white standard poodle from Grand Island, New York; Best puppy in Show, a Siberian husky from Selkirk, Ont.
On Saturday, a shortwired hair Dachshund from Richmond Hill took top honours and in the puppy category, an American cocker spaniel from Beachville, Ontario.
On Sunday, a German Shepherd from Phelpston, Ontario, won Best in Show and a Pekingese from Carleton Place was the top puppy.
