The Suicide Resource Group of Wellington-Dufferin plans a public launch of 'Youth Talk - ACelebration of Life,' in Fergus next Friday, March 23.

"We are pleased to continue our relationship with the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in their continuing support of projects that address the issues of youth suicide in our communities," Sandra Parkinson, the group's spokesperson said in a release Wednesday.

"This second phase of our 'Youth Talk' educational initiative is possible thanks to a $94,500 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF)."

Phase one, also supported by the OTF, provided education and support that accompanied the touring of the highly successful play "A Permanent Solution..." within Wellington and Dufferin high schools.

The Suicide Resource Group, in collaboration with the Upper Grand District School Board and the Canadian Mental Health Association Grand River Branch, are working together over the next three years in the creation of youth-led projects. These peer activities will assist students to talk more openly about the risks of suicide, develop an understanding of signs of distress in their peers, build coping skills to face their struggles, and gain knowledge about where to go for help.

"Our community has taken up the challenge of facing the myths and realities of suicide in a proactive and life-affirming way," Ms. Parkinson said. "We believe it is important to acknowledge the achievements already made and the spirit of hope that our most recent suicide prevention initiative brings."

The launch will take place at Centre Wellington District High School, 905 Scotland St. The program will include acknowledgements from Don Jonescu with the Ontario Trillium Foundation and M.P.P. Liz Sandals. There will be an opportunity to hear about the new initiative from the perspective of the school staff, the Project Facilitator and the youth themselves.

"We will also provide a viewing of the highly acclaimed educational DVD (10 min.) created by the Suicide Resource Group," Ms. Parkinson added.
