Suspicious messages reported to OPP

2007-03-22 / Local News

Caledon OPP report that several Caledon-area businesses have complained to them of receiving suspicious e-mails or faxes.

The messages received told a story of a mother of five who had recently lost her husband in an explosion in Lebanon. She requests the banking information of the recipient of the fax or e-mail which included their bank's name and address with account and routing number as well as their beneficiary name and address. The purpose is to safeguard large amounts of funds by transferring them to Canadian accounts. Person(s) willing to assist with this request are told that they would receive a percentage of the funds.

Caledon OPP remind business owners and residents to never give out banking information over the Internet, fax, mail or telephone. For your protection, do not respond in any manner to requests of this nature; shred the faxes and delete the e-mails.
