A bounty for trees in the 1870's

Apropos to the occasional letters to the editor concerning the gradual cutting of the town's old maples trees, I though you might be interested in this bit of information I came across while searching old documents relating to the early history of the beginning of the Orangeville Horticultural Society - there was one as far back as the late 1800's:

"The planting of trees in Orangeville was initiated in the 1870's by Jesse Ketchum, who out of his own pocket paid 50c per tree. Later the Town council took up the cause and paid a bounty of $1.00 to homeowners for every tree planted along the boulevard.

"The trees in Alexandria Park were planted by the Horticultural Society in 1903."
