Would you like to own a U2 War album signed by all members of the band, or perhaps The End of the Beginning war speeches by Sir Winston Churchill, or even the first issue of Life Magazine? These are just some of Allan McGuire's collectible items going on sale this Sunday.

Mr. McGuire has been collecting books, newspapers, magazines, vintage ads and many other items for about 50 years. He has acquired quite the collection in that time, some of which is from his grandfather John D. Higinbotham who also had a passion for collectibles and traveling the world. One item Mr. McGuire received from his grandfather is a 120-year-old miniature totem pole.

He has hundreds of paperback books he'll be selling for 25 cents each and over 1,000 hardcover books to be sold at 50 cents each, many of which are first editions. There will also be fine art books for sale between $1 and $30. Mr. McGuire will be selling an 1843 volume of Punch, a humorous magazine that was based in Great Britain.

Many of his vintage ads include car advertisements, Coca-Cola ads and more all being under sold at $1 each. He has several thousand copies of Life Magazine, including the first issue, published in 1936.

Mr. McGuire is parting with his collections as he and his family are moving to a smaller home. He said it will be very sad to part with a lot of his items. As an artist himself, who studied interior design at the Ontario College of Arts, he will be selling some of his own drawings and other paintings.

One of Mr. McGuire's most interesting pieces in his collection is a screen print of Pierre Trudeau, titled 90 Trudeaus.

Mr. McGuire has been retired for about 30 years and has spent his time drawing, selling autographs and books he's collected and traveling. He has even lived in Europe and Ireland for brief periods with his family. He said he hasn't really had a boring moment since he's retired.

"I've enjoyed all of these items and I hope others will too," he said.

The sale will take place this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 21053 Main Street in Alton.
