Election record of sorts set in Melancthon
      Melancthon Township might be the only municipality in history to have had both an acting mayor and an acting deputy mayor at the same time, and one temporarily vacant seat on the council. And now it has a fourway race for the mayor's chair. After the May 28 election, the present acting mayor will resume his duties as deputy, and the present acting deputy will return to his elected council seat.

      Thousands of Canadian students joined together at Vimy Ridge, in France, for the 90th Anniversary of the Battle and the rededication of the war monument.

Trailway transplants what were to be doomed trees
      In recognition of Earth Day this Saturday, Upper Grand Trailway Association will be saving 150-200 trees that otherwise would be destined for the Great Forest in the Sky. Later this year, Grand Valley Trail (a separate entity despite similarity of name) is expected to link up with Upper Grand from the south, to complete its hiking route from the Waterloo area to Luther Marsh.

Bee disaster invades Dufferin, North America
      Eagle's Nest Apiary has been hit with the biggest loss of honey bees that owner Henrijs Vilcinskis says has ever faced him. But, even so, he might be better off than many of his fellow beekeepers in the Niagara Peninsula and throughout the United States.

Primrose property already zoned for OPP station
      A tract on Highway 9 east of Primrose was given the necessary zoning for a new OPP station almost three years ago, Mono Planner Mark Early has confirmed. But Mr. Early says that landowner Barry McLean Construction would still have a few a few shackles to remove before a police station could actually be built on the site.

Museum exhibit at Queen's Park
      Every year, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario invites museums and cultural institutions from across the province to participate in their Community Exhibits program. As a result, display cabinets line the corridors in the East and West Wings of the Legislature building that are seen by more that 250,000 visitors.

Headwaters auxiliary hosts regional conference
      About 240 representatives from District Three of the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario (HAAO) will congregate at the Orangeville Agricultural Centre today (Thursday) for a day-long conference. Delegates will attend from a wide area of Ontario from Huntsville to the Bruce Peninsula and west to Lake Huron.

      WEEBLES WABBLE, (below) a local team that participated on Sunday for the annual Zehrs Super Cities walk for multiple sclerosis, who were on hand to defend their title as highest fundraisers last year. (Above) Over 200 walkers took part in Orangeville and raised about $50,000 for M.S. research Sunday. The crowd was enthusiastic and ready for the day having been served breakfast before the walk.

Annual County Forest report released
      Dufferin County has released its annual report for the forest properties known as the Dufferin County Forest. The county owns and manages over 2,500 acres of forest in the area, centred on a 1,500-acre "Main Tract" north of Mansfield in Mulmur Township.

County joins call for fair health-care funding for high-growth communities
      Joining with councils in a number of other high-growth communities, Dufferin County council has unanimously endorsed a resolution calling on the Ontario Government to improve local access to hospital and community health care services by addressing the growing gap in health-care funding facing residents in Dufferin County.
