Silver lining for Atom Tigers

The Sanderson Source for Sports' Atom B Tigers finished the season by capturing the silver medal at the OWHA Provincial Championships last weekend in Mississauga.

The Tigers split round robin competition on Friday with a 2-0 win over the St. Catharines Chaos on Friday morning with phenomenal goals from Jamie Petersen and Cidnee Sarginson with assists going to Megan Gancasz, Kayley Mutton, and Taylor Sullivan.

Friday afternoon they faced stiffer competition versus Whitby, dropping a close 2-1decision to the Wolves. Orangeville's lone goal lone goal came from Gancasz with assists from Sarginson and Emily Cino.

Seeded second in their division, the Tigers started the elimination round against the Windsor Wildcats and won a low scoring match 1-0 with the lone marker coming from Petersen and assisted by the intrepid Lindsey Smith.

The quarter-final game saw Orangeville upset the favoured Leaside Wildcats and win 2-1. Goals in this game came from Smith and Petersen and a helper from Gancasz.

With the gold medal in sight, the underdog Tigers began early Sunday morning in a grueling semi-final match against the Woodstock Wildcats.

Both teams were evenly matched and with white-hot goaltending by Isabelle Hunter played scoreless through regulation time.

The Tigers maintained their poise and composure, persevering through three overtime periods.

In the fourth overtime, the Tigers came out victorious when a Sullivan centring pass was tipped by Gancasz and Lauren Bond snapped a blistering wrist shot into the top corner of the net to end this incredible marathon match.

Completely fatigued by the game, it was doubtful the Tigers would be able to compete in the championship match.

But with the same determination and desire usually witnessed in the professional leagues, the girls concentrated their focus on one final game.

Facing the top ranked Walkerton Capitals, Orangeville came out skating and eager to win.

Relentless fore-checking by Courteney Lewis and Jamie Collis disrupted the Capital offense while the formidable defense of Claire Anderson, Cino, Mutton, Claire Renouf, and Grace Whitfield limited the Walkerton chances with timely pokechecks, crafty clearing passes and mostly limited Walkerton to the periphery.

Mackenzie Coulter- Pittman scored the first goal of the game after being set up by Mutton and adeptly maneuvering around the defense.

However, the Capitals rebounded to tie it up to end the opening frame.

The Tigers battled on and ended regulation time deadlocked at 1-1.

Thistime however, there would be no storybook ending as Walkerton managed to take the game 2-1 with a goal in the first overtime period.

Again, Hunter was exceptional in the tiger net, stopping 29 of 31 shots to six Orangeville shots over the entire match.

This game was an unbelievable accomplishment for the Atom B Tigers as they accumulated finalist medals at each of six tournament competitions during the 06/07 season and these girls are sure to provide inspiration for the continued success of girls' hockey in Orangeville.

Congratulations to all of the girls and also head coach Matt Gancasz, assistant coaches Jim Collis and Kevin Sullivan, trainers Connie Lewis and Bev Whitfield and manager Wendy Sarginson for an excellent season.
