Before a packed house at Westside Secondary School on Tuesday night, the Dufferin Family of Schools had an opportunity to showcase some of their 'best of the best' athletes competing in the Dufferin County Volleyball Championships.

Each of the teams competing Tuesday had earned a berth in the finals after rising to the top of their respective pools in tournament play at ODSS and CDDHS the week before.

Kicking off the evening, it was Credit Meadows and East Garafraxa going the distance in the girls B pool final.

Credit Meadows jumped out to an early lead with a 21-15 win in the first set but were forced to regroup after East Gary rebounded 21-7 in the second.

Playing a best two out of three format, it was Credit Meadows taking the win by a score of 15-9 in the third set.

Two equally deserving teams took to the floor in the girls A pool final but it was strong serving that made the difference for Centennial who rolled to a win over Parkinson with back to back set wins, 21-11 and 21-17.

The third game of the evening featured Princess Elizabeth squaring off against Hyland Heights in the boys B pool final.

Both teams served well and plenty of offense was created by each.

In the end though it was

Hyland Heights consistent passing that lead them over Princess Elizabeth to win by scores of 21-18 and 21-16.

In the final pairing of the night, it was Laurelwoods hooking up against Credit Meadows to decide the boys A pool winner.

Both teams put powerful offensive units on the court but it was Laurelwoods consistently managing to win the big rallies that gave them the edge.

Dropping the first set 21- 8, Credit Meadows battled back in the second but just couldn't get over the hump and it was Laurelwoods taking the second set 21-19 to claim the A championship.

The Dufferin Physical Education Council would like to thank the numerous coaches and volunteers who donated their time throughout the volleyball season.

They also wish to extend their congratulations to all the athletes who participated both at the tournament and in the championship night.
