Conservation easements said not mandatory
      A Mono resident looking to build his family a house on property he's owned for 13 years has learned that a conservation easement sought by Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) is a voluntary process, meaning he doesn't have to give up his land to permit it.

Weekend power failure hit Shelburne, townships
      Hydro One says a failed lightning arrester caused a four-hour power failure on Saturday that affected Shelburne and three townships - Amaranth, Melancthon, and Southgate (including Dundalk and the former Proton Township). The outage at about 4:40 p.m. affected about 4,660 homes and was described as a forced power interruption.

Sisters run in Rome for diabetes
      Combining her passion for running with the hope of finding a cure for diabetes, a local business owner set out to not only run a marathon in Rome, but to raise a minimum of $6,100 for diabetes research. Deidra Cook accomplished this goal in March with her sister Audra, who also raised $6,100.

      DUFFERIN COUNTY began rolling out green bins for Orangeville residents this week. Collection will start the week of May 7. The bins came with information on what residents can and cannot put in the bins. Garage sale to benefit local SPCA branch
      A local animal lover is hoping to raise funds for the Orangeville and District branch of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) through a community garage sale on May 5. Fred Von Veh recently lost his dog, Trissie, and wanted to do something to help raise money for the local OSPCA.

Local hair designer wins national award
      After completing a 10- month course at the Art and Technique Academy of Hair and Esthetics in Brampton, Lauren Murphy, a hair stylist in Orangeville, has won a national award for hair design. As part of the Allied Beauty Association (ABA) show held at the beginning of April, Ms. Murphy completed in Wella's Young Protege competition.

Council seeks restaurant RFP
      Orangeville Council is pushing forward with a Request for Proposal (RFP) to replace the Don Cherry's Restaurant in the Alder Street Recreation Centre despite a recommendation from the director of parks and recreation that the process be suspended.

Solution seen possible for town's sewage woes
      There may be a solution to Shelburne's population-limiting sewage treatment allocation disclosed by R.J. Burnside & Associates earlier this month, but the solution may take some time. The issue was discussed by town council in several closed-door sessions and in a report produced by XCG Consultants Ltd., a Kitchener based environmental consulting firm, that was released on Tuesday.

      The successful showing of Fresh Art, Fresh Air and Free Parking "In the City" at the Etobicoke Civic Centre was surpassed last weekend by an even more successful showing "In the Country," at the Mono Community Centre. The juried show featured 80 works by 37 Dufferinarea artists.
