Kelly Walker, friends at Opera House benefit
A popular song from the 1960s declared, "You Gotta Have Friends." Kelly Walker, a former Dufferin resident, is definitely a friend of the Dufferin County Museum and Archives (DCMA). He in turn has called on his 'friends' to raise money for the museum.
The man. The music. The message. Now and again you find a voice, a message and a man wrapped into one to bring songs to the heart of a people. Kelly Walker is it! The words, the music, the stories combine to create a most entertaining and inspiring Canadian performer.
Kelly Walker is an author, speaker as well as an accomplished singer, songwriter and recording artist. The stories told in his songs are accompanied by his piano playing. Kelly's recording career continues. He is currently preparing a new CD of piano improvisations entitled "Somewhere".
Joining him for this special afternoon of music, song, story and celebration are his friends and friends of the DCMA Jean Edwards, Mark DuBois, Susan Cooper, Billy Newton Davis and Dini Petty.
Mark DuBois is universally acclaimed for his outstanding lyric-tenor voice, its exceptional clarity and tonal purity, and his artistry and musicianship in performance.
Jean Edwards a long time Dufferin weekender with a phenomenal soprano voice that can still hit the high notes and her rendition of "White Cliffs of Dover" are sure to bring a tear to your eye. With a voice like Jean's, you would never know that she was in her eightieth year.
Susan Cooper is a local mezzo-soprano whose range of music has expanded into a very wide selection of repertoire. Her talents have taken her into important professional engagements in various genres, all while she continues to give of her wonderful gifts to various organizations and as a teacher, Susan is accomplished in both piano and singing techniques.
Billy Newton-Davis has been singing, dancing and acting on a global scale for the last 20 years. A threetime Juno award winner, he has many songwriter credits. Many will recognize Billy from his recent performance with the Nylons and his single hit duet with Céline Dion "Can't Live With You, Can't Live Without You".
Dini Petty, a Dufferin resident and strong community supporter, possesses a quick wit and incredible energy. Dini is a brilliant speaker, author, and poet with a grace and sense of fun that is hard to resist.
The concert will take place at the Orangeville Town Hall Opera House on Sunday, May 6. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., with the concert set to begin at 2. The Opera House is at 87 Broadway.
Proceeds from the concert will go to the Dufferin County Museum to support ongoing community programs. "It's wonderful to have such great people give of their time so generously for the benefit of the Museum". said DCMA's Curator, Wayne Townsend.
Concert ticket holders will enjoy a private reception after the concert, complete with complimentary refreshments and cash bar.
