Encouraged by realization

I am encouraged that Premiere Dalton McGuinty has come to the realization that the development of thermal technologies is a favourable method for dealing with Ontario's solid waste crisis. His Government will fast-track environmental assessments from municipalities that wish to pursue pilot projects.

The development of these technologies to deal with waste disposal in no way means a reduction in the current blue box, green bin programs or efforts to divert items from entering the waste stream.

Dufferin County had maintained that they were in a far better position than most municipalities because they had a 200 acre landfill that had gone through the lengthy environmental process just waiting to be used as a site for gasification or a composting facility.

In May of 2006 the members of the County Council led us to believe that they would come up with a solution to the problem of solid waste before the end of their term in November, 2006. It is needless to say that they weren't successful.

The new County Council has many new faces at the table but also some familiar ones. The County Council is approximately five months into its mandate but why hasn't this issue been brought to the top of their agenda?

While Dufferin's political leadership talks about building a gasification facility the Plasco Energy Group is doing just that in Ottawa.

It is only state of the art wasteto energy project currently under construction in this Province and it is due to be completed this summer.

Enough talk! Make a decision and get on with it!
