2007-04-26 / Regional News

The technology department at Orangeville District Secondary School (ODSS) has announced that the second annual Orangeville Electric Car Grand Prix (OECGP), presented by Meridian Credit Union, will take place on June 2 and 3.

The event will take place, on the newly paved ODSS parking lot (northwest corner). The temporary road race circuit measures about 3/8 of a kilometre. Teams are expected from around the province. They will compete in 12- and/or 24-volt classes. The high school students will design, build and race, these single seat/open wheel cars.

Each race on Sunday, June 3, will be one hour long. The highly successful 2006 event saw cars exceed 60 km/h! Students will compete for cash and trophy awards (engineering presentation, preparation, finishing position), as well.

The "rain or shine" event is free for spectators.

The proposed schedule calls for practice sessions at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed at 2:30 by a qualifying round. On Sunday, a second qualifying round will start at 8:30 a.m., with a 12-volt race set for 11:30 and a 24-volt competition at 1:30.

Barbara Gardiner, branch manager for Meridian Credit Union said she is "honoured to be the Grand Marshall of the OECGP and so thrilled that our Good Neighbour Program supported the efforts of the students and teachers for this great event!"
