Weekend split starts Northmen B season
Not quite the start they had planned, but for the MacMaster Pontiac Buick GMC Northmen Junior B lacrosse team, their 2007 campaign is officially underway with one win and one loss over the past weekend.
Friday night the team got things rolling on the road doubling up over the Six Nations Arrows.
Lead by Troy Ross and Kyle Kallay with a pair of goals each, Orangeville looked strong throughout the game.
Backed up by Curtis Rydall drawing his first start between the pipes for Orangeville, the Northmen never looked back on the way to a 8-4 win.
Things were different back home Monday night.
With Owen Sound occupying the visitors bench, Kallay opened the scoring with a power-play goal just over five minutes into the opening frame.
Not to be outdone, the Rams returned the favour in kind to even the score, then added another pair of what would eventually total six power-play markers to carry a 3-1 lead into the second.
Owen Sound's Travis Gibbons widened the lead, adding his second of three for the night, off the top of two, snapping a shot through the middle.
Aarron McNutt notched his first of the season, a power-play goal at 11:19 to make it 4-2.
Playing tentative ball, the largely rookie Northmen team soon found themselves in penalty trouble again, giving up another pair of power play markers to end the second.
Orangeville cranked up their shots on goal going into the third but it was Owen Sound that continued to do all the scoring making it 10- 2 before Northmen Jeremy Noble popped one from the left side with 4:37 remaining to play.
Andrew Stoner added a pair with the clock winding down in the final two minutes of play to spark some life into his team but at the final buzzer, it was Owen Sound coming out on top by a final score of 10-5.
Speaking after the game, Orangeville assistant coach Brandon Sanderson was rather pragmatic about the outcome. "We don't like to lose," said Sanderson. Adding to that, he noted that they still have a large number of newcomers and rookie players on the floor and it's way to early to panic.
Attributing some of the teams tentative play to "a bit of opening night jitters" Sanderson commented on how many of the guys "seemed to be fighting the ball a lot".
With six of Owen Sounds 10 goal total coming on the power-play he knows one area they will have to work on is special teams in practice this week, in addition going over a lot of other points to try and get everyone "playing on the same page".
The week ahead will also be a busy one on the game front.
Sunday it's on the bus to Spartan for the first meeting of the two teams this season then it's back home to the Tony Rose for games against Hamilton and Guelph on Monday and Wednesday nights, respectively.
