Sugar Sofa gains popularity among young diabetics
As a diabetic for more than 25 years, Kim Cooper knows the challenges of living with the condition. Kim was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 9.
Commemorating her 25th diabetes anniversary this year, she has embarked on a number of initiatives to offer support for people with diabetes, and raise awareness in the community. Originally from Orangeville, Kim now resides in Toronto.
Starting a website, www. sugarsofa.com, in 2003, to offer support for kids with Type 1 diabetes, she developed a character named Tino who faces challenges with diabetes.
"I started drawing Tino in my younger days and he always provided a symbol of hope. Tino stands for tenacious, because he is so strong-willed and persistent. My hope is that kids will read his story and be able to relate and know they are not alone in their journey," said Kim.
On the website, she writes a Tino story for kids and also offers free Tino activity books to children. She has sold Tino Frisbees with proceeds going to the Diabetes Hope Foundation and also donated Frisbees to a diabetes camp in Ontario.
Her website has developed over the years and now features her recommended resources and links for diabetes information, providing support for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Kim's latest project is Shootin' Up 101. Originally launched on blogTV in December, the video blog can be seen on her website, along with youtube.com, video.ca, ourmedia.org and other popular sites. During the show, Kim discusses various issues related to diabetes. Her plans include producing her own 30- minute show, which will interview professionals in the field, as well as feature a person with diabetes in the community. The show will be upbeat and informative. Kim's creative flare, positive attitude and on-camera presence have proven successful.
"I've had rewarding feedback from the site and video blogs," she said. "I've had comments and e-mails from people who could relate to my show. My hope is that people will go to my website when they want to research about diabetes, or even if they just want to share their experience with others, or me personally."
Kim is also developing activities for kids on her site that will include games, colouring, and word puzzles.
Not only is she busy adding to her site, she is also writing a book about her experiences in Japan, titled Dear Tokyo, Meet your Next Popstar.
