After falling behind in the opening half, Orangeville came up big in the third quarter, hanging on to win 65-61. Orangeville Hawks played host to the York Avengers in juvenile basketball action at Westside on Tuesday evening.

Playing with a short bench, York tried to take advantage of Orangeville's slow start and quickly jumped out to an early 12-2 lead before the Hawks shooters finally started to find the range.

Paul Lesveque driving in and under the basket from the right was first to the scoreboard for Orangeville.

Back to back rushes down the side by Cory Shody and Travis Irwin added another pair of hoops and a single while Shody would wrap up the quarter with two more and narrow the spread to 14- 11 in favour of York.

Second quarter action saw the Avengers again pressing through the opening minutes to widen their lead.

Coming in off the bench, Brett Barwick seemed to be the spark Orangeville needed.

Following up on baskets from Johan Henry and Irwin, Barwick notched a pair then followed that up with a three pointer from the top before Jack Sommerville closed the half for Orangeville trailing 28-20.

With their feet held to the fire before a small but enthusiastic home crowd, it was again Barwick leading the charge in the third, picking up a rebound in the middle to start a 10 point run for Orangeville.

A steal at mid-court by Kyle Wilhelm was his first of three hoops before Shody picked up a rebound to draw Orangeville within one.

Sloppy ball control allowed York to give themselves a short breather but it wouldn't be long until Orangeville would take the lead.

Shody tallied for another basket while a beautiful pass through traffic by Henry found Jordan Velinor in scoring position for his first of the game.

After some trouble shooting from the outside, Lesveque was rewarded for his persistence, draining a tree pointer from the left while Barwick seemed invincible with another trio of triples, his third, a buzzer beater to lead Orangeville into the final quarter leading 46-39.

Determined not to go home empty handed, York dug deep to get back into the game.

With the Avengers having narrowed the margin to three, it fell on the shoulders of veteran Henry to restore the pace for Orangeville.

Starting with an end to end rush, Henry would pickup a three bouncer under the hoop, then a drive through the middle to score six in a row for the Hawks.

Matt Doyle would get in on the action with a pair of baskets while Shody and Barwick combined for another nine points in the final minutes to give them just enough to hold on for the 65-61 win.
