Bengals earn pair for efforts

The Orangeville Wild Wing Minor Midget Bengal's hardball team held their home opener Tuesday May 8, at the Princess of Wales field in Orangeville hosting North Toronto, a new team in the loop this year.

The Toronto team is rated as an AA team and Orangeville was expected to have a tough time.

Scoring two runs off the top of the first inning, it looked to be a long night ahead for the Bengals.

Orangeville pitcher Jay Muise however had a different plan.

He went the complete game allowing only three hits, three walks and recording 14 strikeouts, Nick Hodgson and Scott Hughes getting the only Bengal hits in a 2-0 loss.

The Bengal's travelled to Vaughan May 17th for the first away game of the season.

In previous games versus Vaughan, Orangeville was used to getting royally trounced but that night it was Trent Barwick's turn to sit the other side down on a regular basis by striking out nine on his way to a complete game.

Justin Williams and Jay Muise both scored twice with RBI's going to Kevin Buck and Ryan Kellow.

The final score was a 4-4 tie but of note, it was also the teams first regular season point in three years of play.

A double header on Victoria Day was a nice end to the weekend, this time away at Thornhill against the mighty Red Sox.

The Sox spanked Orangeville badly in a tournament on Friday night 13-0 so again, they were expecting a tough game.

Game 1, Kevin Buck on the mound and the Bengal's kept it close for the first half but the Sox put them away by the end 9-3.

Game two saw Nick Hodgson take to the mound with Monday Victoria Day fire works popping in all directions.

Nick had all of his best pitches working and what the Sox did hit, the defense took care of.

Bill Hodgson head coach was calling plays and with a few crafty steals and some good base running the Bengal's were ahead through the first five innings.

The Sox tied it up with a squeeze play at the plate but Scott Hughes dove for the next Sox hit to go ahead, and gunned down the runner at the plate with Ryan Davad blocking the plate and making the tag.

The Sox came a bit unglued at that point and Hodgson sat them all down to end the inning with the final result a 4-4 tie and our second regular season point.
