Hockley Highlands customers left in the dark
      It's been over a week since the Hockley Highlands Inn and Conference Centre closed its doors with no prior notice and at least some customers are still in the dark. Toy gun seized from school bus
      Last Friday, May 25, at about 4 p.m., Dufferin OPP officers responded to a report of a gun being seen on a school bus, a student having notified the driver of the bus that a gun had been seen.

Fawcett elected Melancthon mayor
      Debbie Fawcett, who lost last November's mayoralty race to Ron Dillman by a slim margin, has now been elected mayor of Melancthon Township by a margin of 31 over her nearest rival.       OPTIMIST BIKE ROADEO, an annual event for the organization held at the Tony Rose Memorial Arena on Saturday, saw 130 riders from local elementary schools vying for top spot. The top riders from each school were invited to participate in the road safety challenges.

Town formalizes agreement with Humber
      With the Orangeville campus of Humber college (Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning) not ready to take on a flood of eager students, its temporary home will be at the Alder Street Recreation Centre for the first year of operation, starting this September.

Town looking to approve budgets more quickly
      With past Town budgets not being passed until well into the budget year, Orangeville's treasurer has established a timetable that would see future budgets passed in early January. The last two budgets, covering 2006 and 2007, were not passed until April and March, respectively, of those years.

Residents reminded to report suspicious people
      Dufferin OPP is reminding residents to call police immediately when they encounter suspicious people. Daylight break and enter criminals often knock on the front doors of residences to see if anyone is home. If the door is answered, the criminals will often make up a story that they are trying to find someone who lives in the area.

Volunteering to help build school in Kenya
      She wants to make a difference. Not only that, she wants to inspire others to become more involved in volunteer programs, but before she can do her part she needs your help. Katie Dopp, a 22-year-old Orangeville resident enrolled in the Early Childhood Studies program at the University of Guelph-Humber, is one of 10 students traveling to Kenya in May 2008.

Reduce the Juice gets $150,000 Trillium grant
      Randy Dryburgh, local educational co-ordinator for the Reduce the Juice Project, announced Monday that the foundation has been awarded a $150,000 Trillium Foundation grant over two years, which will allow it to continue its conservation work in Dufferin and expand it to Guelph and Kitchener- Waterloo.

Tilson co-hosts Senior Citizen Expo
      David Tilson, MP for Dufferin - Caledon, and the Orangeville and District Seniors Centre hosted a successful information forum last Friday. Representing the Orangeville Police Service, Constable Scott Davis educated the crowd on the growing problem of identity theft and fraud in a presentation dubbed "Fraud Busters".

      A FOUR-CAR ACCIDENT had one lane block for motorists travelling north on Highway 10, near the Monora Park entrance Thursday afternoon for a short period of time. A green Volkswagen was stopped to make a left turn and was hit from behind by a red Buick that had managed to stop but was hit by a silver Toyota. A pick-up truck was also involved in the accident.

United church to bless same-sex unions
      Westminster United Church in Orangeville this Sunday will announce that it is prepared to sanction same-sex marriages, the board chairman has confirmed. Brian Heimbecker said Tuesday the decision was taken in a 10-5 vote of the Board Monday night.
