Bantam Northmen golden

It was a long road for just a short season but the Orangeville Northmen Bantam A team managed to bring home the gold in this year's provincial Field Championships held in Kitchener.

Sponsored by Sanderson Sports, the team had an impressive regular season only dropping one game when they were missing a few players who were participating in the team Ontario Camp.

They struggled through the qualifying round dropping a game to Oakville and then an overtime loss to Six Nations.

This put the boys in third position which meant an elimination game against St. Catherines, a challenge to which they were more than up to, coming out on top and advanced to the final six.

Orangeville faced Oakville in game one and defeated them quite easily 12-7.

Their next opponent was the same Oshawa team that beat them 2 years ago in the gold medal game 8-7.

This year history was not to be repeated as the Northmen battled hard as a team to edge Oshawa 12-11 and advanced to the semi final.

This match up saw Orangeville play a team they hadn't seen before, the Peterborough Lakers.

This game got off to a rocky start as the Peterborough coaches called equipment violations against Orangeville forcing a couple of players out of the line up to fix their equipment and giving Peterborough back to back power plays.

The Lakers went up by five on the Northmen only to see the boys battle back and tie things up at 9-9.

The Lakers quickly called a time out to settle down and it seemed to work as they ran up another four goals restore their lead.

Orangeville showed extreme calm as they rallied at the right time to erase the four goal deficit and pull ahead by one.

The Northmen took the victory 12-11 and advanced to the Gold medal game against their rivals from the south Halton Hills.

This game lived up to the hype as well.

Neither of these two teams had seen each other this season.

The game was a very close match as both teams traded goal for goal in a match between two lacrosse power houses and the excitement was incredible.

Orangeville had taken the lead late in the game and had control for the most part of the fourth quarter.

Halton never gave up as they slowly clawed their way back within a goal.

With time winding down Halton had control of the ball and with only one second left in the game the Bulldogs managed a quick shot that found the back of the net to force overtime.

The first 2 periods of overtime saw both teams score one goal each and kept things tied at 12.

This now set up a third overtime period which was to be decided by sudden death victory.

Orangeville quickly gained possession and had numerous chances but couldn't get one past a stub- born Halton goalie.

Halton had a couple of chances but were foiled by some deflections and big saves.

With the conclusion of the third overtime it became evident that the next face off was the key to victory.

The fans were on the edge of their seats knowing that victory was close.

Now in the fourth overtime period it was the Northmen who won the draw and had possession.

They worked the ball down to the corner made a break to the net and with once bounced shot the game was over giving Orangeville a 13-12 victory and top place as tournament gold medal champions.
