Town formalizes agreement with Humber
With the Orangeville campus of Humber college (Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning) not ready to take on a flood of eager students, its temporary home will be at the Alder Street Recreation Centre for the first year of operation, starting this September.
The draft agreement, soon to be finalized, between the college and the Town, is for an initial 10 months, August 15, 2007 to June 15, 2008, with an optional one-year extension starting on June 16, 2008. The agreement also allows for additional extensions if required.
The space dedicated for Humber College use includes an area for administration, faculty and a student study/common space along with shared space for classrooms.
The student study/common area, about 840 square feet, will be constructed as a partitioned area within the Alder Street library branch. It will be accessed from the main upstairs hallway, adjacent to the second floor washrooms. The administration and faculty space, about 1,100 square feet, will be accessed from the same hallway through a new doorway.
The shared space will encompass part of Meeting Room 4 and meeting rooms 1, 2 and 3 combined into one large room to be used as a classroom with 198 seats. Humber will occupy this space from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday during the school year, which is about 28.65 per cent of available renting time.
Parking for faculty and students will be limited to the north portion of the parking lot, with students needing a parking permit.
Any alterations made to the rec centre will be paid for by the college and torn down after Humber is done using the space, unless the Town directs otherwise.
During the initial term the Town will receive about $54,000 for base rent and operating costs.
Half of the money received will be placed into a reserve for capital improvements to the recreation centre.
