'Best Little Whorehouse' opens next Thursday
Contributed Photo THE FEMALE CAST of The Best Little Whorehouse take time to pose for a picture during rehearsals. The show will be opening on June 21 at the Grace Tipling Concert Hall in Shelburne. Now don't you be getting those shorts in a knot, There's Nothin' Dirty Goin' On but Get Your 'Yee -Haw' ready to kick this summer off, as the evenings in Shelburne are going to be heating up come the first day of summer, June 21.
That's when Taylor Wilson's production of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas! (music and lyrics by Carol Hall, book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson, based on a story by Larry L. King) will open at the Grace Tipling Concert Hall.
Originally staged on Broadway in 1978 and made into a film starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds, the musical dramatizes the real-life story of a legendary house of ill-repute, The Chicken Ranch (A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place) that remained open for many years until the Governor ordered the local sheriff to shut it down.
The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas! is a rip-roaring, high octane, and rather daring production, with Miss Mona and her girls taking on the establishment.
For this production Taylor has brought together some talented up-and-coming artists, all theatre, dance, music graduates of Sheridan College's musical theatre program, Ryerson Theatre and Dance departments, University of Toronto and York University.
Rehearsals, which began in mid April, are taking place daily in Toronto. Cast and crew will move up to Shelburne on June 16, when they will perform a sneak peek at the Grace Tipling Concert Hall during the town's "Doors Open" celebration, and prepare themselves for a two-week run starting June 21.
Producer/director Taylor Wilson is a native of Shelburne and a member of Theatre Orangeville's Young Company (1995-1999). A recipient of a Dufferin Arts Council Scholarship, he studied at York University, where he worked toward a BFA in Theatre Production and Design. He has worked in theatre in various capacities, from performer to composer and writer to stage manager to production manager, in Toronto and throughout Muskoka.
Taylor appeared in his own award-winning production, "The Monster Under My Bed," at the Toronto Fringe Festival and then took it on tour.
The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas! is Taylor's first work with such a largescale production both as producer and director. He is excited to be bringing this musical to his home town and thanks the Town of Shelburne for their enthusiasm and support.
Performances will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday June 21, 22 and 23, and June 28, 29, 30, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 23, there will be a 2 p.m. matinee. As well, for those who dare, there's a rather exciting midnight performance on Friday June 29. The June 28 performance is already sold out.
Tickets, available through Theatre Orangeville's box office (87 Broadway, Orangeville) 519-942-3423, are $22 for adults and $17 for seniors and students (high school).
