Northmen to face Nations in OLA final
The Rayburn Construction Northmen will find themselves up against a familiar foe in hostile territory when they open the Ontario Lacrosse Association finals against the Arrows in Six Nations on Friday night.
After splitting their first two semi-final games against Brampton, Orangeville earned a berth in the championship series by putting together three consecutive winning efforts over four nights to eliminate the Excelsiors.
Game three action in Orangeville on Thursday started off where things had left off in Brampton, two nights prior, with Brampton getting out to an early lead. Undaunted, the Northmen wasted no time in evening things up with Adam Jones and Mike McLeod finding the mark, sending both teams into the second tied at 2-2.
Brampton would take the lead again early in the second but it was McLeod stepping up to rally his team with the equalizer at 14:46. From there on it was all Orangeville as Jeff Ivey, Matt Lyons and Jay Card each chipped in singles before ending the mid-frame with the Northmen up 6-3.
Lyons and Matt McNutt would widen the gap to four goals before Brampton's John McClure would manage to get one by Nick Rose with just over nine minutes left on the clock. Rose would exact some revenge of his own though, when he scored a goal on a long throw from his own end, finding the empty Excelsior net to make it 9-4. Jon Thomson finalized things for Orangeville with a buzzer-beating goal making it 10-4 to finish the game.
Game four back in Brampton started off looking like a replay of game three. The two teams swapped a pair of goals, Orangeville's from Card and McLeod, to again go into the second tied at two and as in game three it would be the Northmen pulling away through the mid-frame. Another pair off the stick of McLeod and a single by Glen Bryan put Orangeville in the driver's seat heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
Off the top of three it was McLeod unassisted scoring his fourth on the night, before a pair of Excelsior goals would draw the teams within two at 6-4. That would be it for Brampton, however, setting up what would prove to be the final game back in Orangeville on Sunday.
This time there was no no questioning the outcome with Orangeville dominating the game from the start.
Card started the Northmen juggernaut rolling, scoring just 33 seconds in from the opening draw.
Lyons, Jones, McLeod and McNutt each followed suit with only two Brampton shots getting past Rose to make it 5-2 going into the second.
A lone Excelsior's goal just over two minutes into the second would ultimately prove to be their last of 2007.
Matt McLeod would count for another pair of Orangeville markers while Cody Richardson, Andrew Suitor, Jessie Gamble and Matt Baker each found the range to give Orangeville the game by a 11-3 score and take the series four games to one.
Two players that Orangeville will be counting on in the final are veterans Matt Lyons and captain Mike McLeod, Both have seen action against the Nations before in the playoffs and each agrees that while coming into this series as apparent underdogs, they have as good a chance as anyone to take this championship.
Lyons points out that "Right now, everyone is on the same page. We are all mentally ready and know what we have to do."
McLeod echoes Lyons words adding this is a different year and a different team than has met the Nations in the past. "We're all glad to be here. It was a tough series against Brampton and we are as ready as we can be both mentally and game wise going into the final." He notes that unlike series in the past, this time every one is healthy and knows going in "We are going to win if we come out and show them our best."
